More Homes on Government Land

The NSW Government plans to sell a huge piece of public land on Parramatta Road in Camperdown to build just 100 private homes. This is a huge waste of valuable public land that could deliver thousands of new market, social, and affordable homes. The NSW Government must urgently upzone this land to allow many more homes where people want to live.

They’ve said that housing is its top priority - sign this petition to tell them to keep their word!

It should be upzoned to allow a minimum of 20 storeys with a 30% social component tomorrow. No public consultation, no reports, just get it done. There are 16-storey buildings just next door. Anything less than this would be a waste of a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deliver much-needed homes.

The former Westconnex site is less than 3km from Central Station. It is walking distance from RPA, USyd, shops, and has access to the best bus services in the country. It is large, flat and empty, making it perfect for dense high-rise development.

RPA can't afford to keep losing staff because healthcare workers are being priced out of the inner city, and we know many are driving hours each day before performing critical work for our community.

Rents in Sydney have increased by 50% in three years - renters can’t afford for the government to be cautious. To address this, the government has set ambitious housing targets, but it’s not going to reach them missing opportunities like this.

Last year, Planning Secretary Kiersten Fishburn said we have to “take risks to prise the barnacles off the planning system” to make it work. Clearly, she needs a bigger crowbar.

Unbelievably, by being unwilling to change the planning rules, the government is turning down as much as $100 million. Nearby land zoned for high-rise is worth almost three times as much. This is money that could be spent on other public housing builds or infrastructure to support their housing program.

Sign this petition to tell the planning minister you support more well-located homes, more social homes and more money in the government’s pocket.

This campaign is being run by Sydney YIMBY, a grassroots non-profit fighting to make Sydney's housing more affordable. You can find out more about us here, or become a member.

I support changing the planning controls on the Camperdown Westconnex dive site to allow 20 storey residential with a 30% social housing component.
