Support Minns Government's NSW Planning Overhaul

The NSW Government has announced that they will be allowing 3-6 storey apartments within 800m of train stations in R3 zones, townhouses and low-rise apartments in R2 zones around train stations, and dual occupancies in all R2 zones. This is exactly the type of bold reform that Sydney YIMBY has been campaigning for for months. It's a massive win for NSW, and is expected to boost NSW's housing supply by over 112,000 new homes, helping to put downward pressure on Sydney's unaffordable house and rental prices.

But Sydney YIMBY needs your help. Now is the time to get loud. You can guarantee people who love the status quo will be doing everything they can to protect it. We need you to show there’s support for “yes” in the community. Write to your state MP to tell them you support this policy. Let your state MP know how these changes will not only help all of Sydney, but how they will affect you personally. The more voices that they hear, the better. Check out "Email Tips" for advice on what to write.

Thank you for your support; with your help, we can all make this city a fairer, more affordable and more liveable place to live.

- Applaud the government on taking bold action to boost Sydney's housing supply and resolve the housing crisis

- Discuss how these reforms will mean a variety of housing stock for all sorts of people. Someone might not be able to afford a detached house next to an inner-city train station, but they could more reasonably afford a townhouse or low-rise apartment.

- Connect these changes to how they will affect you personally. Focus on personal anecdotes, current struggles, and how these reforms could help you.

- If you can, you could address what you'd like the government to do to make these changes as effective as possible. Avoid minimum lot sizes, address the overabundance of heritage conservation areas in Sydney, reduce strict parking requirements, prevent new downzoning and so on. These changes will help to prevent community and council intervention.

- If you're feeling ambitious, you could even float the idea of mass upzoning around railway stations. 75% of residential land around train stations in Sydney is zoned for only R2; upzoning to R3 and R4 zoning will help to boost supply even further.
